Tea Ceremony with Sokei

Morita Sokei brings more than 25 years of experience in Chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony. For over 15 years, she has taught as a certified Omotesenke-style instructor in San Diego, guiding students in both the practice and spirit of tea.

A founding member of the Omotesenke Domonkai she is dedicated to preserving and sharing the traditions of Chanoyu while fostering a deeper appreciation for its cultural and aesthetic values.

Every movement carried intention-measured, quiet, and deeply present. From the soft sound of the whisk meeting the bowl to the gentle placement of each utensil, there was a rhythm that invited stillness. Nothing was rushed, nothing unnecessary. Just a quiet unfolding.

Sokei’s presence was incredibly grounding. There was a calm confidence in the way each step was performed, as if years of practice had distilled into something effortless and serene. It wasn't just about preparing matcha-it was about honoring the moment, the space, and the people within it.

The matcha itself tasted even more profound in that setting-smooth, umami-rich, almost meditative. You could feel the care behind it. It wasn't just something you drink, but something you experience fully.

What stayed the most was the feeling after. A sense of calm that lingered. A reminder to slow down, to be present, and to find beauty in simplicity.

An experience that goes far beyond tea.
